The Belize Audubon Society, formed in 1969, together with the Belize Eco-tourism Association (an organization associated with the Belize Tourism Industry Association) have both contributed to establishing Belize as a model for eco-tourism and sustainable development. There may be fewer green marketing messages in Belize than in more recent converts to the green agenda but the roots run deep and you'll find a strong sense of environmental consciousness among the population as a whole.
In revealrealestate’s 2008 analysis we found 16% of Belize real estate developments have publically available information on steps taken (or planned) against our five criteria on environmental and social responsibility:
There may be a great deal more 'silent activity' and we plan to take additonal steps to identify the extent of this in our 2009 survey. Owners and developers, if there are social and environmental action steps that you have taken, please contact us with the details.
Proportionaly, Cayo district has the greatest number of intentional eco-communities in Belize. This is not surprizing given Cayo's long standing as an eco-tourism destination with many eco-lodges catering to visitors.
The beach areas of Belize have a smaller proportion of real estate developments with public information on their social and environmental actions.
If developments have one activity of focus, it is most likely to be on biodiversity measures or social responsibility. Action on renewable energy, green building or water and waste management tends to be also accompanied by steps taken against other criteria.
For more information on the criteria used, please see notes to the data.
