Costa Rica's national parks cover almost a quarter of its territory protecting the greatest density of species of any country in the world according to the National Institute of Biodiversity. Costa Rica has three UNESCO World Bioshphere reserves, a greater number than the other countires in our sample. It’s not surprising that the country is recognized globally as an eco-tourism destination.
When it comes to real estate, Costa Rica has clearly demonstrated that there is a strong appetite for "eco-sensitive", "earth friendly", "low impact", "green" property investments.
The 10% of real estate developments in our sample that we found to have public information on environmental plans and actions, is likely to be under-reported. Environmental responsibility is a relatively mature topic in Costa Rica; more embedded in policies and processes than elsewhere in the region, and may be less outwardly visible.
In our 2009 survey we will make efforts to capture this ‘silent’ social and environmental activity and revise our figures. Owners and developers, if there are social and environmental action steps that you have taken, please contact us with the details.
The country generates 78 percent of its energy with hydroelectric power and another 18 percent by wind or geo-thermally. It now plans to cut emissions from transport, farming and industry.
In fact in 2007 the environmental minister set the ambitious plan to be a carbon neutral country by 2030. This would involve cutting its net greenhouse gas emissions to zero and would certainly bolster the country’s long standing reputation as a green trailblazer.
