Corozal town has a picturesque setting behind a sea wall on the gently curving Corozal Bay. The town is a haphazard collection of clapboard Caribbean houses mixed in with cement block housing and Mexican styles. Here life is laid back and quiet, punctuated by the occasional fiesta. Boating and fishing for tarpon and bonefish in the bay are popular attractions.
A key draw of the area is its proximity to Mexico. Real estate promoters regularly mention the ease of getting to Chetumal across the border, a town of 260,000 inhabitants (compared to Corozal's 9,000) with good medical care and American style shopping outlets.
They're also right to point out that property asking prices in Corozal are lower than elsewhere on the coast such as for Placencia or Ambergris Caye real estate. Corozal is one of the few places in Belize where you can purchase property with a view of a golf course - the 9 hole course at Consejo Shores. There is talk of a new 18 hole golf course and residential real estate project called Bellcan Golf Resort & Marina at mile 4 on the Corozal to Consejo road.
Corozal is located in Northern Belize, just 9 miles south of the Mexican Border and less than 90 miles north of Belize City. Domestic carriers Maya and Tropic have scheduled daily flights to Corozal.
