Tamarindo lies on the southern end of a long sandy bay first made famous by surfers and deep-sea fishermen. The bay continues to the north to include Playa Grande, separated from Tamarindo beach by a salt water estuary. Playa Grande is a protected nesting area for the giant leatherback turtle.
Tamarindo has evolved into a major real estate draw. Property prices have risen considerably over the past few years and the high end beach-side vacation homes earn staggeringly high rental rates. The town is well positioned for the residential tourism market offering a wide array of accommodations, restaurants, shopping, orange sunsets and a lively nightlife. Surfers are fanatical about the surf breaks in the area and golfing facilities are close at hand. After being deemed "unsafe for swimming" by the Ministry of Health in 2007, Playa Tamarindo was given a clean bill of health in September 2008.
Domestic flights land at the Tamarindo airport seven days a week. Liberia International Airport is 60 minutes by car.

Tamarindo is an intriguing mix of modern amenities, modern problems and old fashioned enjoyment. Unfortunately, the restaurants at the main beach area were closed down on our last trip, probably a result of the downturn. Some of the best hotels like the Capitan Suizo, Tamarindo Diria and Riu Guanacaste offer great accomodations. Lots of surfers, tourists, night life and druggies. Be careful at night and dont leave anything with a plug in your room.

We saw over 50 different lots in 5 towns and areas of Guanacaste, from high end developments to rough lots in the jungle. We were convinced we wanted an ocean view since we live in Southern CA and oceanview lots are in the millions. When we stumbled on Venado Hills near Portogolpe, an easy 15 minutes from Tamarindo, I almost cried when I saw the views. It is peaceful, gorgeous and very affordable for land in a gated community. The owner is a Tico and one of the nicest gentlemen Ive met here. The sale went smoothly, we have electric and water onsite and will begin building our home very soon. Tamarindo has the same challenges as surfing towns in the US. So being in a private, safe community near a gas station Huacas and 3 large markets is much better.

If ever there was a time to invest in an exotic home in Latin America, this is it - or so the sales pitch would have it. The region is being touted as the one most likely to emerge unscathed from the current economic turbulence, with luxury new developments aimed at foreign buyers in the most unlikely locations under the sun.
