Entry and visa requirements

Residency, retirement and living

Belize

Visitors from North America, most European and Commonwealth countries do not need a visa.  You are permitted to stay in Belize for a period of 30 days. Your passport needs to be good for six months after your departure date and you may be asked to show a return ticket.  If you need to stay longer, your 30 days visitor allowance can be extended at a cost of US $25-50 per month, depending on the length of extension.  There are special programs available for those wishing to retire in Belize.  Review the Belize retirement section below.

Nicaragua

Most foreigners receive a 90 day tourist visa (US $5) upon entering Nicaragua (a few countries are restricted).  Tourist visas can be renewed for an additional three months by leaving and re-entering the country at any official border crossing or by applying at the Office of Immigration and paying a fee.  Your passport must be valid for at least six months following date of entry and you may be required to show a return ticket.

Costa Rica

U.S, Canadian and citizens of most European countries will be issued a 90 day visa upon arrival in Costa Rica. To extend visitors must leave the country at any official border crossing.  Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days following date of entry and you may be asked to show a return ticket.

Panama

A US $5 tourist visa is issued to citizens of the US and Canada on arrival.  In May 2007 the Panama Legislature reduced the term of the visa from 90 days to 30 days.  A backlash from the real estate and tourism sectors followed and the 90 days has since been re-instated for US citizens - un-officially, as the Law has not been revised.  Canadian citizens still are allowed 30 days, although this may also change.  Citizens of many European countries require only to show a valid passport.  Immigration officials occasionally ask for a return ticket.
