Crime can be a concern in Belize although mainly restricted to Belize City and other urban areas. The country has a higher reported crime rate than Nicaragua, Costa Rica or Panama. The Government has responded by establishing a special tourism police in areas most frequented by tourists - which largely overlap with the main Belize real estate areas sought out by international buyers.. As is the case anywhere, visitors should exercise caution and good judgment when visiting.
Nicaragua is generally considered a safe country. There is little gang violence and most security incidents involve petty theft. But recent years have seen an increase in violent crime, mostly in poorer neighborhoods of Managua, the capital city. Saftey indicators measuring crime rates set on our indicators page show Nicaragua at similar levels as Panama.
Driving conditions, especailly at night can be dangerous. Roads can be in poor condition and are often pooly lit at night making it hard to see oxcarts, horses, bicycles and other vehicles.
Costa Rica is generally a safe country with low reported crime levels. Most crime is petty involving theft of electronic items, jewelry, cash or credit cards. Travellers are encouraged to exercise caution as they would throughout the world. Local law enforcement agencies have limited capabilities. Travelers should minimize driving at night, especially outside urban areas.
With the exception of the remote Darien Province, Panama is considered a safe country. It is not recommended to travel to areas close to the Panama-Colombia border. Crime is rising slightly in Panama City but the overall feeling is that the country is safe and welcoming to visitors. The road infrastucture in Panama is of a higer quality than found elsewhere in the region.
